Arshaq Saleem won the U16 section of the Susan Polgar Boys and Girls championship. This qualifies Arshaq to play for the USA in Greece next year for the world championship in the U16 section! WAY TO GO!
Here is Grandmaster Susan Polgar presenting Arshaq with his hard won trophy.
on the ladder we have some movement. I need forms from all the students. I have many students on the ladder that are not coming to the club.

Welcome New Members and Pins homework
What homework? well yes homework, if you want to get better at chess you have to practice, sent home today was Pins practice. A pin is where a piece threatens the King with another piece in the way of the king. The piece in between the king and the threatening piece is the "pinned" piece. It is a very useful tactic to capturing the opponents pieces without getting captured yourself. The trick though is to learn chess notation. I will be working with the kids next week. The exercises shouldn't take too long, and are of course voluntary.
Not much action on the ladder except my computer (or perhaps my human error in data entry) did not record the games correctly from two weeks ago. I have been trying to edit names of students that are not back this year. But I also wanted to leave students who were here last year to retain their rank on the ladder. Hopefully I got it right this week. Sorry Patrick for not getting your game recorded, but it should be correct now.

Up and Running new Chess Ladder, USCF rated tournament Oct 5th at Coe College
We had a great chess club this morning. I have shaken the dust off the old chess ladder and we got started this morning. We had two games, Peter Adams taking on Patrick Selby and Sebastian defeating Aidan (who told me his name was misspelled). We started to learn notation, and Iona Scheer was helping Ashley Niemiec learn the moves. We did some computer analysis of games we had recorded and Students are encouraged to play their parents and notate the games so we can analyse these games as well.
I also told the history of the Weber Chess Club and the many state champions that have come from that very room. Arshaq Saleem (current K-8 State champion), Ziwen Zhen(2013 K-8 State Champion), and Teresa Knecht(2013 and 2014 Girls State Champion) all got their start at Weber Elementary. Peter was so impressed he took it upon himself to dust the trophies.
On Oct 5th there will be a tournament at Coe College, this is a USCF Rated tournament and is sponsored by their newly formed chess club. Games will be long with each player getting 45 minutes to make their moves but I feel that the top 6 of our chess ladder could compete and have fun, just need to remember notation and to take their time with moves.
I realize some of these names are not present and over the next few weeks there will be some editing.

Round 5
Peter remains undefeated and the Vigil Boys all forfeit, well, it wasn't their fault their sister Crissy got her braces off and that was the only time I could fit her in to the orthodontists and our schedule. I didn't get pictures either. We will go two more rounds, and see if Peter can hold on undefeated, but even so a win next week will lock him up as Weber Champion.
Also I will be coming back next year for Chess Club, at first I thought I would have another commitment but such is life, it didn't materialize.

Round 3 results and round 4 pairings
Sam Callahan and Peter Adams are the only undefeated players so far and playing next week. Teya Kerns used her drummers cool to defeat Teddy Kim in a last second game, the clocks were on and Teddy lost on time. Yusef will play Joey next week in a battle of 2 point players. And someone remind me to take pictures next week.
Longfellow is having a free tournament on Saturday May 3rd for a 5 round of game 30, please arrive at 9am for registration.

Round 2 done, Round three ready for next week.
OK, action packed morning. Peter Adams defended board 1 and defeated Dominic Rutkowski. His brother Sebastian fell on Board 2 to Joseph Vigil in what was a bad morning to be a Rutkowski. Sam Callahan and Arun Dixut also remained undefeated to set up next weeks pairings for boards 1 and 2.
The Kerns's fought to a brother sister love fest and tied. Carter Philips rebounded from last weeks defeat.
We had a new student join and Barry spent his time teaching Miley the rules.
On May 3rd there will be a tournament at Longfellow Elementary all day Saturday, and it is FREE! No USCF membership required, it will be very similar to the Weber tournament. (in fact you may recognize the chess sets!)

End of year Tournament
We started a tournament that will run to the end of the year to crown a Weber Chess Champion.
We
are using standard swiss pairings, this gives a chance for students to
be assigned other students to play in a more structured format. Results from week 1 Peter Adams took a commanding lead on Board 1 and Sam Callahan upset 2nd seated Carter Philips in a tough match.
